How to Run for Mayor, City Council, or Park Board

If you wish to run for mayor or a seat on city council or park board and have your name listed on the election ballot, you will need to file a Statement of Interest (SFN 10172) and a Petition/Certificate of Nomination (SFN 02704) and acquire the required number of signatures and submit these forms to the City Auditor by 4:00 p.m. on April 11. If you are running as a write-in candidate, you do not need to file these forms. Please contact Kindred City Hall for more information.

Important 2022 Dates for City Election Candidates
January 1, 2022 - A city election candidate may begin collecting signatures on a nominating petition (even numbered years). (NDCC 40-21-07)

April 11, 2022 @ 4:00 p.m. - Deadline for candidates for city offices to file their election petitions is 64 days before the election. (NDCC 40-21-07) The city auditor shall determine the arrangement of the names of the candidates upon the ballot by conducting a drawing immediately after the deadline for the filing of nomination petitions. (NDCC 40-21-08) (The auditor shall set the date, time, and location for the drawing and give advance notice to the candidates involved.) Immediately after this drawing, the city auditor shall notify the county auditor of the offices to be filled and of any measures to appear on the city election ballot. (even numbered years) (NDCC 40-21-02)

June 14, 2022  (Election Day) - Second Tuesday in June - Combined election in even numbered years - City election is held in conjunction with the state primary election except in certain home rule cities. (NDCC 40-21-02)
